Biography
Dr. Elizur Butler was a physician and ABCFM missionary in the Cherokee Nation. Convicted with Samuel Worcester on September 15, 1831 for residing there without a Georgia license, he refused the clemency terms and served at hard labor in the Georgia Penitentiary at Milledgeville until his release on January 14, 1833, following the Supreme Court's decision in Worcester v. Georgia. His treatment by the Georgia Guard was notably brutal.
