Biography

Oregon communist organizer arrested for speaking at a peaceful Communist Party meeting in Portland in July 1934 protesting police shootings of striking longshoremen. Convicted under Oregon's Criminal Syndicalism Law and sentenced to seven years. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously reversed the conviction in De Jonge v. Oregon (1937), holding that peaceable assembly for lawful discussion cannot be made a crime.
