Biography
Charles Turner Torrey was a Congregationalist minister and abolitionist editor. He is credited with helping approximately 400 enslaved people escape via the Underground Railroad, primarily out of Maryland and Washington, D.C. Arrested in Baltimore in June 1844, convicted of assisting the escape of two enslaved people, and sentenced to 6 years at the Maryland State Penitentiary in Baltimore. He died of tuberculosis at the prison on May 9, 1846, before completing his sentence. His funeral in Boston drew thousands and made him a martyr of the abolitionist movement.
