Biography
Cameron Monte Smith, a Canadian national in the U.S. illegally, age 49, fired shots into the Wheelock Substation near Ray, North Dakota in May 2023, knocking out power for 240+ people and causing $1.2 million in damage. He had previously fired shots at a Keystone Pipeline transformer and pump station near Carpenter, South Dakota in July 2022. Documents indicated DAPL spray-painted near the substation. Pleaded guilty in both districts to one count each of destruction of an energy facility; 25 years federal prison total (consecutive 150-month sentences). The federal judge found his crimes met the definition of terrorism; the case was prosecuted by the National Security Division Counterterrorism Section.
