Biography
Bernard Lee was a student civil-rights activist (earlier expelled from Alabama State College for a 1960 sit-in) who was among the four Negro leaders arrested in Montgomery on May 25, 1961 for 'breaching the peace' during the Freedom Rides.
Bernard Scott Lee, September 10, 1935 to February 10, 1991, was an SCLC organizer and close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. On December 10, 1961 he was among the eight interracial Freedom Riders arrested at the Albany, Georgia train station after the group attempted to use the white waiting room; the riders were charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of traffic, and failure to obey an officer, and taken to police headquarters. His release and the case disposition are unresolved in the catalog record.
