Biography

Barrows Dunham was chairman of Temple University's philosophy department who was suspended and indicted for contempt of Congress after refusing to answer the House Un-American Activities Committee beyond his name and birthdate. His case reflected the McCarthy-era pressure on academics who resisted congressional investigations.

Note: Several online authority records display November 19, 1995; this record uses November 14 (contemporary Philadelphia Inquirer obituary).
