Biography

Arthur McPhaul was a Black Detroit labor and civil-rights figure, a former official of the Michigan Civil Rights Congress, convicted of contempt of Congress in December 1956 for refusing in 1952 to surrender the organization's books and records to the House Un-American Activities Committee. His case became McPhaul v. United States.
