Biography
Annie Adams was the wife of Steve Adams, confined with her children inside the Idaho penitentiary under the claim that they were held for protection. The confinement was used to pressure Steve Adams to testify.
She was held from March 3 to September 7, 1906 — 188 days — at the Idaho State Penitentiary in Boise. No charge was ever brought against her; the stated reason was protection, and the effect, and the point, was pressure on her husband.
THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THIS RECORD POSTDATES HER OWN CONFINEMENT. It is cut from the Pittsburgh Press of June 19, 1907, nine months after her release, under the headline "Love Breaks Double Bars of Labor Prisoners at Boise." The caption names both women in it — "Mrs. Steve Adams on right and Mrs. Pettibone on left, talking through barred windows of cell to Pettibone within" — so in this picture she is a visitor at the bars, not a prisoner behind them. The record shows the right-hand figure, cropped from the clipping; the woman on the left is George Pettibone's wife.
