Biography

Albert Gallatin Browne Jr. was a Salem-born abolitionist and Harvard law student arrested in Boston on May 26, 1854, during the effort to prevent Anthony Burns from being returned to slavery. He was held in Suffolk jail on a murder complaint arising from the death of courthouse guard James Batchelder. The complaint was reduced to riot, and his Harvard class report records admission to bail on June 7; the grand jury found no indictment. His exact physical-release date remains unverified. He later worked as a journalist and as Governor John A. Andrew’s military secretary. He was born February 14, 1835, and died June 24, 1891.
