Biography
Albert Brooks was born on September 10, 1888 in Illinois; the precise locality and his death are unresolved.
A Beaverhead County, Montana jury convicted him on May 24, 1918, in case number 735, under MONTANA'S STATE SEDITION LAW. His conduct was distributing the Industrial Workers of the World pamphlet "War and the Workers", written by Walker C. Smith. He was sentenced to seven to fifteen years and incarcerated at Montana State Prison, Deer Lodge.
THE MONTANA SUPREME COURT REVERSED HIS CONVICTION ON APRIL 8, 1920, docket number 4419, because the pamphlet had not been read to the jury and a biased juror had been allowed to sit. He was released on May 4, 1920, after a reported twenty-four months served.
This was a state prosecution. An earlier version of this record classified it as a federal Espionage Act conviction. His exact arrest, sentencing and prison-admission dates are unresolved.
