Biography
Mary Agnes Chase (April 20, 1869 - September 24, 1963) was a botanist and a member of the National Woman's Party, one of the "Silent Sentinels" imprisoned during the 1917-1919 campaign to picket the Wilson White House for woman suffrage. She became one of the world's leading agrostologists, and the Smithsonian holds her papers.
She served a ten-day sentence from August 15 to 20, 1918, released early with the rest of that group. A further five-day term followed in January 1919, but its exact dates remain unresolved.
Her birth date is April 20, 1869, per the Smithsonian record; April 29 appears in some accounts and is wrong.
