Biography

Agnes Gertrude Bauerlein was a Dutch-born mother, grandmother, and lifelong social activist in Ambler and Philadelphia. Having lost a brother and sister in WWII bombings of the Netherlands, she devoted her life to peace work; she and her husband opened their Ambler home to the Plowshares Eight defendants during the 1981 Norristown trial, traveled to Iraq with the Gulf Peace Team in 1991 to try to avert war, and was repeatedly jailed for nonviolent action. She died at age 87 of complications from Alzheimer's, survived by 11 children, 26 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
