Biography

Abraham Gelerter was a conscientious objector from New York imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: arrived at Leavenworth from Camp Funston on Sept. 15, ; after refusal to drill (at ??), was beaten by sentries & put into solitary confinement cell (& deprived of phylactery)
