Abdul Maumin Khabir

Biography

Abdul Maumin Khabir is a falsely accused political prisoner, sentenced to life under RICO laws. He was indicted in August 1986 and arrested over 8 years later in 1995. Prior to his arrest, Maumin spent about 9 years traveling, visiting Muslim countries and developing ties within the Republic of New Afrika. A blatant miscarriage of justice took place when five men were convicted in federal court based on their alleged association with the alleged "street gang" El Rukns, not because of any criminal activity. Maumin Khabir was initially offered a 30 year plea bargain with a promise of no further indictments if he would plead guilty to a charge of committing "terrorist" acts for the Libyan government. He refused because of his innocence and remains incarcerated to this day.

Maumin suffers from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), severe emphysema, and is asthmatic. He also experiences chronic back pain due to bone degeneration. Maumin was held at USP Terre Haute and had been requesting a transfer to a medical facility for over 5 years. It was only until a public campaign put pressure on the BOP that he was transferred and given less than a year to live. In 2015, his lung capacity was reduced to less than 5% and he relied fully on oxygen. Despite multiple requests for compassionate release, Maumin was not freed until February 15, 2022.

Maumin Khabir (Melvin Mayes) was identified by the U.S. government as an El Rukn "general" and convicted under RICO in connection with the group's conspiracy with Libya. After years as a fugitive and then decades imprisoned, he was released on February 15, 2022.
