Biography
A. Robert Kaufman was a 28-year-old Baltimore socialist convicted of disorderly conduct and fined $50 for selling the newspaper Young Socialist outside a Baltimore high school. Fired as a substitute teacher and beaten by students, he appealed the conviction as an attack on free expression.
